An analytical model for studying the effect of a static shunt var system (SVS) on the dynamic stability of a power system is proposed. The method is a version of the eigenvalue method and its validity is confirmed by simulation. General trends of the effects of SVS control parameters on dynamic stability are shown. The voltage feedback control is useful for increasing the synchronizing power and the use of an auxiliary stabilizing signal is useful for increasing the damping force; the latter is found to be more effective from viewpoints of dynamic stability.
