The thermal neutron activation of the impurities in disks of pure sulfur and sulfur-loaded rubber was determined by means of BETA decay and gamma spectrometry. The interference with the fast neutron fiux measurements by the S/ sup 32/(n,p)P/sup 32/ reaction caused by these activations was calculated for a short critical excursion of a solution of enriched uranium. It is shown that for the nominally pure sulfur disk, the impurity activation would be less than 1% of the P/sup 32/ beta activity within one hour of the exposure. (auth)
