In recent years cases of scientific fraud in the general media and in the scienific world have regularly given rise to discussion. Various forms of scientific fraud can be differentiated, such as fabrication, falsification and plagiarism. All three have in common that scientific data and/or findings are falsly reported. In this article these terms are more closely defined within the framework of clinical research. Furthermore, examples and reasons for scientific misconduct are specified and the possible consequences are discussed. Further main topics of this article are the criteria of authorship and ethical guidelines.
