Urea solution containing 230-g nitrogen (N) was soil-applied on Sept. 17 or Oct. 2 to assess the effect of autumnal N applications on fruit characteristics and storage reserves of 8-year-old ‘Fuyu’ persimmon trees. Concentrations of N, soluble sugars, and amino acids in leaves collected immediately before abscission were highest in those trees that received N on Sept. 17. Fruits showed lower skin coloration, especially when N was applied on Sept. 17. However, autumnal N applications did not significantly affect concentrations of N, nonstructural carbohydrates, or nitrogenous compounds in the fruits. Autumnal N applications reduced percent fruit softening after a 3-month storage period. N concentrations of the shoots collected on March 21 the following year was 0.81% and 0.78% for the Sept. 17 and Oct. 2 applications, respectively, a significant increase over the control. Shoot concentrations of soluble sugars and amino acids were significantly higher, but starch concentrations were lower in the trees that received N applications in the previous autumn.
