This study examines the impact of exporting during the global financial crisis on the firm-level total factor productivity (TFP). Propensity score matching and difference-in-differences methods (PSM-DID) were applied to correct for the sample selection biases that could arise from both observable and unobservable differences in traits between exporting and non-exporting firms. The results from firm-level data on the Korean manufacturing industries between 2008 and 2017 confirm that exporters during the global financial crisis were systematically different from non-exporting companies in terms of firm age, size and capital intensity. In addition, the Ordinary Least Squares estimation results show that there exists a statistically significant association between exporting during the global financial crisis and TFP. However, after accounting for the sample selection biases employing the PSM-DID method, we find no evidence of the causal relationship between exporting and TFP. The results suggest that the observed productivity premium of exporting firms is explained by sample selection that occurs when firms with higher productivity self-select into exporting.
