Athletic participation in youth sports is occurring on an ever-increasing level each year. All states require an examination before young athletes are allowed to participate in interscholastic sports to identify conditions that may increase the risk of injury. The aims of a preparticipation sports evaluation are to detect conditions that might be life-threatening, disabling, or that may predispose to injury; to indicate which sports are safe for the individual; to serve as a limited general health screening and to meet legal requirements. Preparticipation sports evaluation therefore plays a crucial in ensuring the health and safety of the disabled and healthy young athlete.
