(b New Rochelle, NY, Oct 12, 1930). American composer. As a young man, Gottlieb was first encouraged to compose music by Max Helfman. He studied with karol Rathaus at Queens College (BA 1953), Irving Fine at Brandeis University (MFA 1955), and burrill Phillips and robert Palmer (i) at the University of Illinois (DMA 1964); he also studied with Aaron Copland and Blacher at the Berkshire Music Center during the summers of 1954 and 1955. From 1958 to 1966 he was assistant to Bernstein at the New York PO and from 1970 to 1973 was music director at Temple Israel, St. Louis. In 1973 he became composer-in-residence and in 1975 assistant professor at Hebrew Union College, New York. He has been an instructor at Loyola University and at the New York School of Sacred Music.
