Francis Nicholson, the father of Alfred Nicholson, studied for a time in Scarborough and then returned to Pickering, where he painted portraits, landscapes and animals, mainly in watercolours. After two years in London he worked successively in Whitby, Knaresborough and Ripon, and finally settled in London....
