He was Trésorier and Surintendant des Bâtiments to the Regent, Marie de’ Medici, and Conseiller from 1630 to her son Louis XIII. Maugis was considered a great collector and is known to have had a large and beautifully arranged cabinet of objets d’art, paintings, prints and cameos as well as a library. He may have influenced the taste of Armand-Jean du Plessis de Richelieu who, as Surintendant of Marie’s household, worked with Maugis at the Palais du Luxembourg, Paris, in the 1620s. In 1650 Roger de Piles saw Peter Paul Rubens’s oil sketches for the Life of Marie de’ Medici cycle in Maugis’s collection. Although none of the extant sketches has a provenance that can be traced back to him, it is entirely possible that some were once in his possession.
