Gengoult Prouvé was employed during the mid-19th century in the workshop of Charles Gallé-Reinemer, a manufacturer of ceramics and glass in Nancy and the father of Emile Gallé. (1) Victor Prouvé, his son, also joined the Gallé workshop and later became internationally known as an Art Nouveau designer. Victor’s son, (2) Jean Prouvé, initially a wrought-iron craftsman, later worked as a building designer, developing innovative metal construction techniques. (b Nancy, Aug 13, 1858; d Sétif, Feb 15, 1943). Designer and painter. He joined the Gallé workshop while still a boy, initially becoming a ceramics designer in the company of Emile Gallé. Between 1873 and 1877 he was a student at the Ecole de Dessin in Nancy, afterwards joining the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris until 1882.
