This research is intended to suggest the direction in which the culture of regional, cultural identity, and diversity can be maintained while resisting the standardization and unification of cultures in the era of globalization by looking at Cai Guo-Qiang s work as a creative approach to tradition and the criticism and reflection of historical and social changes. It is hoped to provide meaningful insight into art education by offering a new perspective on his approach to traditions. His works show a new approach toward tradition through the exploration and reflection of his history and culture, while using contemporary international language. I seeks to approach the way he utilizes tradition in terms of modern re-contextualization of myth and history, the combination of traditional media and contemporary subjects, and the open sign and hybridity by analyzing the works of Cai Guo-Qiang s massive retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. By applying this to art education, I suggest the implications and direction to art education through integrated learning with history subject, revitalization of historical narrative, approach to tradition in multiple ways, and combination of modern subject and form.
