On August 10th, 2017, the post delivery man, late Mr. Gilyeon Lee was involved in a traffic accident while he was delivering mails on his motor bike. The car driver crossed the center line and crashed into late Mr. Lee on duty. As it was a car accident occurred during work, he should have received proper medical treatment and such injury must have been officially reported as public official accident. However, it was found that the postal service department intended to conceal the event of such work-related accident by reporting Mr. Lee’s absence from work as use of ordinary sick-day, not as medical leave due to work-related accident. Such intent was caught as Mr. Lee’s colleagues testified that postal service department intentionally did not make correct report of injury at work, in pursuit of an agenda to celebrate 'the completion of 1000 days without any injury at work.' What makes things even worse was that the post office forced late Mr. Lee to come to work, not considering his health condition. As this episode of late Mr. Lee tells us, many mailmen are put at risk to finish their horrendous amount of mail delivery and mail-related works everyday with an only hope that they will not fall in any work-related accident by any chance. I argue that the 'completion of 1000 days with no injury at work' slogan is merely a propaganda to show off, which is an attempt to turn one’s eyes from the reality of mail carrier who are in danger of the series of injury at work caused by the unsafe work environment and/or too long work hours. Therefore, in this article, I will look into the work condition of mail carrier and analyze whether the mail carrier’s suicide triggered by the stress from work can be qualified as an occupational accident eligible for certain benefit.
