During the Japanese occupation period, fictions in the Miscellany Monthly was very popular at the time. Related researches have only selectively studied specific writers, or organized them in a mere mechanical way. Questioning existing approaches, this paper argues that fictions of the periodical should be approached structurally from the perspective of the media. In this paper, three types of writers were examined: Tan Weihan, Zhang Ailing, and Xu Gan. Tan Weihan, as a representative of Haipai Wenxue, or the Shanghai School literature, shows that the Miscellany Monthly continues the literary tradition of Haipai Wenxue despite the Japanese occupation. Zhang Ailing becomes a bestselling writer with the support of the editors of the Miscellany Monthly, and represents a new stream of popular fictions in the 1940s. Xu Gan, a secret cultural agent under the command of Yuan Shu, reaches the zenith of his unique non-mainstream war narrative which he has developed since the Orphan Island era.
