This paper examines the characteristics of the work “Hwayuga” within the Fengshan Liu family, a Korean family, and elucidates the context and meaning of its transmission. The analysis commences with an exploration of the leitmotifs present in the work, such as play, journeys, and appreciation. In contrast to other texts related to Hwayu (flower viewing), “Hwayuga” adheres to the fundamental framework while vividly portraying games distinctive to the Hahoe region, including sailing and playing with fire. Additionally, we discerned the significance of journeys and landscapes as central themes, with a highly structured narrative flow. The symbolic sense of place, particularly embodied in the ‘Hahoe 16 Sutras,’ is prominently featured in the work. Moreover, we observed an emphasis on the process of cultivating pride as a family member, surpassing the emotional relief often associated with the profound melancholy experienced by women, a common theme in the lyrics. The paper also evaluates the contextual aspects of the work’s creation and the driving forces behind its transmission from two perspectives. Firstly, it investigates how the work perpetuates the creative tradition of “Hahoe Gyeonggok,” linking the creation and transmission within the Hahoe tradition. Secondly, an analysis of the lyrical composition tradition in the Fengshan Liu family, such as “Ssangbyukga,” sheds light on the contextual factors enabling robust intergenerational transmission within the family. “Hwayuga” has traditionally been regarded as women’s poetry. Through the examination of “Hwayuga,” we gain insights into the production and transmission of Hwayuga texts within the family and the broader community. This contributes to a comprehensive understanding of various facets of Naebanggasa (Korean women’s traditional poetry) transmission, reaffirming its cultural significance.
