Under the Sea is read as a marriage narrative or a marriage-avoidance narrative. In this novel, marriage is a key conflict factor between characters. The reason why Nam Seung-ji avoids marriage can be approached in two ways. First, Lee Bang-geun’s suicide causes Nam Seung-ji’s melancholy. Nam Seung-ji resents Lee Bang-geun, who committed suicide. And he harasses himself, identifying himself with Lee Bang-geun. Therefore, Nam Seung-ji cannot find a reason for living in Japan and avoids marriage. Second, the shame of escaping from the April 3 incident in Jeju is also the basis for self-recrimination. Nam Seung-ji thinks that he is not qualified to marry. Then, the Korean War broke out, and the civilian oppression and massacre took place on Jeju Island under the guise of preliminary arrest. By escorting the two women who stowed away to Tsushima to avoid the oppression, Nam Seung-ji gets the courage to live in Japan out of melancholy. Kim Seok-beom uses the railroad connecting Tokyo, Osaka, and Kobe in Japan as an important narrative device. The railroad allows the reader to share the pressure of a helpless advance into inevitable fate with Nam Seung-ji. The railroad is a symbol of the fate of characters and their fluctuations. There are many repetitive narratives in Under the Sea. It is a repetition in the form of characters pondering what Lee Bang-geun said. The act of rumination itself is a way of mourning. Through this mourning, Nam Seung-ji overcomes his self-inflicted depression and transitions from the world of death to the world dominated by the principles of life. In addition, this repetition dismantles the usual concept of time and creates eternity as nothing by mixing recollections and present, dreams and reality. Through this iterations, Kim Seok-beom intends to sublimate the Jeju April 3 incident, which was taboo in the past, into a literary state as being repeatedly said beyond history.
