Rui ying huang chao(瑞應皇朝) in Jie jie hao yin(瑞應皇朝), which consists of the ancient story of the Governor of Bingzhou receiving a jade horse from a snowless land after a large snowfall and devoting it to the Emperor during the Western Jin Dynasty, to the Shengpingshu transmitted festival court play Yu ma gui chao(玉馬歸朝), analyzes the differences and changing patterns between the Qianlong period festival court plays and those of the latter period. Though the relevance between the two works can be inferred by their plots and characters, because most existing literature only study festival court plays as a list of plays, such relevance has not been identified. There are currently many records of Shengpingshu Yu ma gui chao’s various scripts, costumes, and make-up. Jie jie hao yin lacks such performance and historical records, making it difficult to speculate its performance characteristics. Thus, Yu ma gui chao is a meaningful literary work in inferring the transmission of Jie jie hao yin and its effect on later festival court plays. By comparing the two works, this article diachronically examines the transmission of festival court plays within the Qing Palace and uses such findings to analyze the changing patterns between the early and late festival court plays. Jie jie hao yin that consisted of high literary value of merchants, literary examinations, and the livelihoods of the common people were excluded. Furthermore, while Jie jie hao yin, which was created under the grandiose palace play environment of the Qianlong period, had numerous actors appearing together and utilized various props, dijing, and stage devices, plays that had a small number of characters and that was able to be performed on a simple stage were the only ones that survived in the latter Shengpingshu stage. Because of this, Jie jie hao yin’s Rui ying huang chao, like Yu ma gui chao, became dramatized and transmitted as a latter Shengpingshu play. On the other hand, most other plays were not passed-on, making it impossible to find their traces in Shenpingshu archives and Qing Dynasty historical records.
