This paper measures the levels of auditors’ professional skepticism with audit adjustment and empirically studies how the managerial ability affects the levels of auditors’ professional skepticism. We find that, auditors take highly capable managers’ pursuit for better reputation as a sign of trustworthiness, therefore lowering their levels of professional skepticism for the financial reports of firms in which highly capable managers work. Moreover, the results of additional analysis suggest that lower levels of auditor professional skepticism for financial reports of firms with highly capable managers lead to higher levels of earnings management after the audits. Inadequate professional skepticism is considered a major cause of audit failures. The findings of our research show that the personal characteristics of managers are also an important factor that affects auditors’ professional skepticism, and lower levels of auditor professional skepticism resulting from the reputation effects of highly capable managers reduces the quality of audits.
