A growing and important literature on pedagogy emphasises interactive teaching/learning methods. Interactive learning requires that students construct much of what they learn for themselves. In this paper we explain how we assist students to process information as they navigate a path through conceptual space. As students think through and establish links between concepts, we believe that they develop important learning attributes: self-confidence, analytical rigor, and the ability to ask the right questions. As teachers we can provide students with information. But if they don`t take the information in, make causal links between ideas, interpret what they see and make sense of it, ultimately no matter how good a teacher might be, student learning will be compromised. To address this problem, our approach to interactive learning emphazises the AIM method. AIM focuses on three important issues: Audience, Information and Motivation. Students expect to learn things that are relevant to their interests and concerns. Understanding the needs and abilities of our audience is crucial in selecting what to teach; that is, the information or course material that we present. The relevance and interest associated with the material provides the motivation for our students to learn. This provides a pivotal basis for successful interactive learning. We find that when using the AIM approach the level of interaction within small classes can be maintained almost as much in the large classes. Student evaluations of class teaching performance can increase dramatically, and the class environment becomes more positive. The size of the classroom appears not to matter as much as what goes on inside it.
