Alexis de Tocqueville wrote Democracy in America twice. While the first volume published in 1835 was welcomed by literary critics and political circles, the second volume, published 5 years later, suffered negative and critical assessments. Tocqueville clarified that the second volume focusing on democracy itself contained abstract and theoretical reflection, while the first volume dealing with American issues consisted of empirical and descriptive contents. In effect, although the two volumes with the same title covered the identical theme, each of them presented entirely different appraisal and prospects. The first volume mainly analyzed American political culture and presented optimistic prospects of democracy. However, after publishing the volume, Tocqueville, who stayed in Britain, ran for elections and entered politics, indicated new consideration and somewhat changed viewpoints. Democracy in the second volume got closer to ideal type than realities, and assumed inactive and enervated manner. In the first volume, Tocqueville painted landscapes of democracy pivoting around America while comparing America and France. But the second volume looked like an abstract of democracy that overshadowed all concrete scenes such as America, Britain, and France.
