This study aims to examine the environmental problems posed by ocean waste, particularly plastic Ghost nets, which threaten marine ecosystems, and to explore textile products made from recycled Ghost nets, thereby improving environmental awareness in the field of art and design. The research focuses on Italy's Aquafil, Hyosung TNC Co., Ltd.’s world’s first abandoned Ghost nets based recycled nylon yarn in 2007, and NETSPA Co., Ltd.'s developed a technology to mechanically separate Ghost nets made of three types of plastic materials and produce 99.6% pure regenerated Nylon. Chapter 2 looks at the recycling process of fishing nets to understand the physical and chemical recycling methods involving the collection, washing, separation, grinding, and depolymerization of abandoned nets. Chapter 3 investigates companies that produce regenerated Nylon yarn from recycled Ghost nets and examines the launched products made from recycled yarn. This exploration reveals the importance of collaboration with local governments, coastal communities, fishermen, and non-profit organizations in collecting and securing abandoned Ghost nets. In Chapter 4, by examining both international and domestic textile products that utilize Econyl yarn and Mipan® Regen Ocean yarn. Chapter 5 concludes the research by deriving meaningful analysis from each case study. In conclusion, the researcher advocates for the circular utilization of waste plastic fibers as a means to both reflect upon and reform past practices within the textile industry. This research hopes that textile manufacturers, product designers, and artists who work with textile materials will embrace Zero Waste principles, prioritize eco-friendly materials, and thus contribute to environmental sustainability while upholding ethical design values.
