The unprecedented phenomenon of population decline in South Korea has emerged as a significant issue, leading to active research on urban shrinkage. However, most studies focus on identifying the extent, factors, and characteristics of urban shrinkage using the city as a whole as the unit of analysis, with limited research on the spatial patterns of shrinkage within cities. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial characteristics focusing on the change of densely inhabited districts in municipalities experiencing population decline. After defining relatively densely inhabited districts (RDID), spatial changes of them were classified and analyzed with multiple indicators based on the population grid with 500m for 2000 and 2020. The findings showed that RDIDs generally shrank and urban compactness also tended to decrease in depopulating cities, and these patterns of change were classified into five clusters. Based on these results, we suggested several implications related to urban maintenance and regeneration centered on RDIDs considering the shrinkage characteristics of each region within the broader direction of transitioning towards a more compact urban spatial structure.
