Im Hwa’s time in Pyeongyang(May 1934-April 1935) during Japanese occupation is one of the most important periods in his life, but little has been known about it. In this paper, I reconstructed his time in Pyeongyang as best I can through a wide examination of various sources, including his texts, contemporary materials, and memoirs about him. The results of this empirical study are summarized as follows. Im Hwa moved to Pyeongyang in May 1934 to recuperate at the invitation of a group of literary youth in Pyeongyang, the ‘Group of Fifteen’ who were concerned about his illness. He stayed at Lee Geun-bae’s home and gave lectures to them on literature and art. Seven of them would later become members of literary coterie magazine, Dancheung(Fault). The Group of Fifteen was part of the locality of Pyeongyang at the time and represents a slice of Pyeongyang’s youth culture. Meanwhile, Im Hwa returned to Gyeongseong in mid-June 1934 for medical treatment. He was charged in the Singeonseol(New Construction) case, but the charges were dropped due to the recruit’s deterioration, and he returned to Pyeongyang in mid-July of that year. As a head clerk of the KAPF, he was very distressed to see most of his colleagues arrested. He wanted to overcome this present pain through mental upliftment. This strategy was already evident in the critique written just prior to the trip to Pyeongyang, and was intensified during his time in Pyeongyang. And he chose ‘German Romanticism’ as the subject of his summer vacation lecture to the Group of Fifteen. In this lecture in late July 1934, which was also attended by Japanese students including Kim Sa-ryang, Im Hwa may have emphasized the greatness of the spirit that refuses to succumb to suffering through German Romanticism. Thus, the Group of Fifteen and romanticism are important elements of Im Hwa’s time in Pyeongyang. The Pyeongyangsilbiuiwon(Pyeongyang poor relief hospital) and the Daedong River were also important to Im Hwa during his time in Pyeongyang as components of the locality of Pyeongyang. Im Hwa was hospitalized in late August 1934 due to a deterioration in his health. This hospital was a poor relief hospital that opened in January 1934 in Chagwan village of Pyeongyang. He was likely treated with the help of Kim Nam-cheon’s friends. His illness can be summarized as a struggle with physical pain, sleepless nights, and the fear of death. To overcome this existential pain, he immersed himself in reading, one of which was Pascal. Armed with a clear logic, Pascal’s humanics posed an irrefutable threat to him. However, he returned to history through nature in the landscape of Pyeongyang, centered on the ‘Daedong River’. The landscape of Pyeongyang reminded him of the immutability of natural laws: when winter comes, spring soon follows, and the river always flows forward. This reaffirmed his belief in the legitimacy of historical materialism laws of history. The path he chose was to return to the field of history. In April 1935, he returned to Gyeongseong. But as an individual, he needed to develop a new logic and language to confront the changed reality. To do so, he needed time. Masan provided that time. In J u ly 1935, he left for Masan.
