Saul Bellow provides an aesthetic ‘space’ in his novels to provide change and rest to the protagonists. This study analyzed the space called ‘Africa’ created by Bellow in Henderson the Rain King. It functions as a breathing space for Henderson to escape his chaotic life. What Henderson needs, who is living an anxious life with his inner voice, is an exit to resolve the situation. ‘Africa’ created by Bellow functions as a place to change Henderson and help him perceive reality. In Africa, Henderson experiences two different tribes, recovers his mind and body, and grows into a soul of listening to the voices of others. Therefore, the space created by Bellow is not only the result of his outstanding thinking, but also shows the aesthetics of creation. This study is significant that it analyzes the role of the space created by Bellow, unlike previous studies. Future study will be expanded to research that combines the problem of human existence with a place from a philosophical view as well as a place as a space of change and rest.
