The purpose of this intervention study was to investigate the effects of explicit instruction on the Concrete-Semiconcrete-Abstract (CSA) steps on the addition ability of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In this study, three students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, consisting of two male students and one female student, who were attending a Special school, participated. To examine the intervention effectiveness, a multiple probe design across participants, a single-subject research design method, was used. Results indicated that all participants’ Addition ability (Single-digit addition without regrouping, Single-digit addition with regrouping, Two-digit addition with regrouping) increased upon the implementation of the Explicit CSA Steps of instruction, and their acquired Addition ability were maintained after the intervention was discontinued. The results suggest that Explicit CSA Steps of instruction was effective in teaching the Addition ability of Autism Spectrum Disorder and also provide evidence-based practice for addressing various levels of addition operation tasks.
