In this study, hydrothermal green synthesis of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) were carried out to make CNC-silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) composites and the variables involved in synthesis were examined using UV-Vis spectrophotometer (UV-Vis) in terms of concentration of each material, temperature, and time. CNC was observed using bio-transmission electron microscopy (Bio-TEM). The length of used CNC was observed to be about 50~100nm, and it was consistent with dynamic light scattering (DLS) results. CNC-AgNPs suspensions were prepared through hydrothermal synthesis of CNC and AgNO3 used as a precursor of AgNPs. The particle size and shape of AgNPs were observed using bio-TEM and spherical AgNPs of diameter 4~30nm were observed. Synthesized suspensions were characterized using UV-Vis and absorbance peaks of synthesized AgNPs at 410~425nm wavelength were observed. CNC-AgNPs films were casted to investigate chemical structures, thermal properties, and antimicrobial activity. Chemical structures of CNC-AgNPs films were investigated by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermal properties were measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In the result of FTIR, the spectrum of hydroxy groups (-OH) at 3270 cm−1 were decreased with the increase of AgNPs indicating the groups participated in the reduction of silver ions and the silver ions (Ag+) were reduced into silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Thermal properties of CNC-AgNPs films were not significantly affected by the synthesis of AgNPs. Morphology of the films was observed using field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), migration of Ag+ from CNC-AgNPs films were examined as well. Antimicrobial activity of CNC-AgNPs films were tested in qualitative way and the activity of CNC-AgNPs films were shown excellent. CNC-AgNPs is evaluated as an eco-friendly material that can be applied to future active packaging materials. CNC-AgNPs has a cellulose-based chemical structure as an antibacterial functional filler. It can improve mutual affinity and dispersity between fibers, and it can be utilized as a renewable nano-filler or coating material on multi-functional packaging paper through various modifications.
