The present study examined the effects maternal intrusive parenting has on the mastery motivation in the children, moderated by their temperaments. Subsequently, the moderation effect was tested. Participants were 124 mother-child (aged 5 to 6 years old) dyads from eleven kindergartens located in Seoul, Gyoung-gi province, and Incheon. Children's mastery motivation and temperament were measured by Dimensions of Mastery Questionnaire(Morgan Busch-Rossnagel, Barret, & Wang, 2009) and Temperament Rating Scale(Cheon, 1993), respectively. Maternal intrusive parenting was assessed using the observation instrument "Intrusive Parenting Scale" developed by the present researcher: Mother's intrusive behaviors shown during the task of mother and child drawing a house together were videotaped and recorded. Data analyses included the descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression. The moderating effect of temperament was analyzed by the procedures proposed by Baron and Kenny(1986). Findings were as follows: First, the maternal intrusive parenting and child's temperament had significant effects on the child's mastery motivation. The more the mother behaved on behalf of her child in the task and the child had high levels of activity and negative emotionality, the lower the mastery motivation in the child. Second, the moderation effect of the child's negative emotionality was found to be significant in the relation between the maternal intrusive parenting of stopping child's involvement and behaving on behalf of the child in the task, and the child's mastery motivation. That is, the mother's intrusive parenting of stopping the child's involvement and behaving on behalf of the child in the task independently had a significantly greater negative effect on the child's mastery motivation only when the child showed a higher level of negative emotionality. In conclusion, depending on the level of child's negative emotionality, mother's actions stopping the child's involvement or behaving on behalf of the child in the task had different effects on the child's development of mastery motivation.
