Bisan Cheowangmegi has been performed for a long time in the area of Bisan-Dong, Seo-Gu, Daegu, Korea. It is played in the form of a ritual that invokes a blessing and peace for the members of village communities and has the purpose of harmonizing the entire village communities such as Doorae (farmer’s cooperative group) and Pumasi (communal sharing of labor). Bisan Cheonwangmegi was designated as Daegu’s Intangible Cultural Property No.4 on Jun 16th 1989 under the name of ‘Cheonwangmegi’. It belongs to Yeongnam Nongak of Gyeongsang prvince, which is basically masculine, so that it was led to be developed into a fast, powerful and unsophisticate style. Also the ancient form of court dance and music, such as Dongje (Korean shamanic ritual) and Jisinbapgi (treading the earth god) has been preserved well, especially Buk tunes and dance shows remarkable performance when compared to other provinces’ Nongak. Kim Soo-Ki, the master of Bisan Chenwangmegi, has been leading the entire course of Chenwangmegi as a leading kkwaenggwari(small gong) player of Bisan Nongak since before Cheonwangmegi was designate as Daegu’s Cultural Property, so he is naturally known as a living witness of Bisan Chenwangmegi. Currently he has established and passed down the course of Bisan Chenwangmegi and tunes of kkwaenggwari(small gong), in short, he is a unrivaled leader in the entire course of Cheonwangmegi. However, his skill is lessening gradually with his age and health problem even though he is the great artisan of Chenwangmegi ever now (2017). Therefore, it is considered and required that the stylistic features of Chenwangmegi are organized systematically and the musical analyzation of tunes in order to hand down it properly and preserve the original form of the tunes of kkwaenggwari(small gong) of Bian Cheonwangmegi. Musical characteristics of tunes of kkwaenggwari(small gong) are as follows. First, Bisan Chenwangmegi is Nongak that has been mainly inherited and performed in the area of Bisan-Dong, Daegu, Korea. Bisan Chenwangmegi takes a role of managing and praying for Dongje (Korean shamanic rituals), which is mingled with ritual ceremonies and plays. Also it shows an aspect of military exorcism, which is a one of the features of Yeongnam Nongak. Second, Bisan Cheonwangmegi generally consists of simple but powerful tunes, which makes audiences feel masculine beauty from it. For another feature of Bisan Chenwangmegi, relatively many Buks are used in tunes compared to the number of Buks being used in other provincial Nongak. Buk takes very important role in Bisan Cheonwangmegi. For this reason, the part of individual plays of Buk has separately developed and inherited. Third, after analyzing Kim Soo-Ki’s gong tunes in 12 episodes of Bisan Chenwangmegi, every single episode clearly shows distinctive gone tunes in Naenun Garak (Opening tune), Byunhyung Garak (main tune) and Maejum Garak (Ending tune). It starts slowly in opening and is led to a repetitive and changeable tune. Finally it ends up with a speeding up and complicating tune. These kinds of characteristics were not shown from the beginning of its history. They have been shown since Dongje (Korean shamanic ritual) and Jisinbapgi (treading the earth god) in the area of Bisan-Dong, Daegu were on the stage and particiaped in contests like The National Fork Arts Contest and Jeonju daesaseumnori, which has led to the advancement and the change of kkwaenggwari(small gong) tunes. This study suggests that we need to promote Nongak rather than Samulnori (Korean traditional percussion quartet) despite present modern musical trend to prioritize fusion style of traditional music. In addition, each provincial characteristics of Nongak are being blended recklessly and deteriorated affected by the mass media focusing more on skillful aspects not on the contents of it. Therefore, concrete and realistic study to preserve and inherit each provincial Nongak must be researched.
