The purpose of this study is to investigate how gender role identity, career maturity , and school adjustment are related for high school students who face university entrance or employment. The self-reported survey was completed by selected 445 male and female third-graders at high school from one academic high school, one industrial high school, and one foreign language high school from Gyeonggi Province. To analyze the survey results, this study used the gender role identity measurement developed by Kim, Hye-Rae(2003), the career maturity measurement used by Lee, Choong-Kuk(1998), and the school adjustment measurement revised and supplemented by Ryu, Yun-Hee(1994). Collected survey results were statistically analyzed using SPSS/Win(Ver. 12.0) and conducted using discriminant analysis, the analysis of variance, and the T-test based on mean and standard deviation. The following is the summary of the study results.First, in the case of career maturity according to gender role identity, the masculine type showed the highest proportion for determinism, independence, and confidence. The androgynous type showed the highest proportion for preparation while the undifferentiated type showed the lowest proportion for career maturity in determinism, preparation, and independence. In the case of school adjustment according to gender role identity, the androgynous type showed the highest adaptation level in the relationship with teachers, friends and lectures while the undifferentiated type showed the lowest adaptation level in all sub categories.Second, there was a significant difference in the distribution of the gender role identity according to the different types of school. Academic and foreign language high school had the androgynous type the most and industrial high school had the undifferentiated type the most. As there was a high distribution of the androgynous type students in academic and foreign language high school, it was analyzed that there was a difference in the gender role identity distribution according to school types.Third, there was a difference in career maturity and school adjustment according to school types. In the case of career maturity, academic high school students showed the highest numbers for determinism, preparation, and independence while foreign language high school students showed the highest numbers for purpose and confidence. Industrial high school showed the lowest maturity level in all sub categories of career maturity. For school adjustment, foreign language high school students showed the highest numbers in the relationship with teachers and lectures while academic high school showed the highest numbers for the relationship with friends. Industrial high school students showed the lowest adjustment level in all sub categories except for school regulation.Fourth, there was a difference in gender role identity between male and female students. Although both male and female students showed high distribution of the undifferentiated type, the female students’ androgynous type distribution was higher than that of male students. In the case of career maturity according to gender role identity type, female students showed higher maturity level in preparation, independence, and purpose compared to male students. In the case of school adjustment according to gender role identity, there was a significant difference between male and female students as female students showed a higher adaptation level in the relationship with teachers, friends, and lectures. As can be observed from the study results, the distribution of high school students’ gender role identity type is different according to school types. Academic and foreign language high school students that had higher distribution of the androgynous type showed higher levels of career maturity and school life adaption. However, industrial high school students that showed a lower distribution of the androgynous type showed lower levels of career maturity and school life adaptation compared to those of other types of high schools indicating there is a difference in career maturity and school adjustment according to school types. There was a significant difference in gender role identity type between male and female students. Female students showed higher distribution of the androgynous type and showed higher levels of career maturity and school adjustment compared to male students.Based on the results, this study confirmed that gender role identity is significantly correlated with career maturity and school adjustment. Since the students of academic, foreign language, and industrial high schools show the different gender role identity types, they should have the different career guidance. Moreover, through comparative analysis of this study, it is confirmed that it is necessary to have the different career guidance for the male and the female students.
