The music of impressionism, started in France, was expanded by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Although Ravel was influenced by Debussy, he tried to open up a new pianism in his piano pieces. He attempted an approach to the classical music in his musical techniques of impressionism. For example, he borrowed a form of classical music. Especially he used the rhythms of dance music from the past.On this paper, to begin with looking out waltz origin and history, how the Ravel's waltz influenced on the modern pop music which summarize a previous waltz.Ravel wrote two pieces of waltz, which were 「Valses nobles et sentimentales」and 「La Valse」.As he said, he used F.Schubert's waltz as a basic model for his「Valses nobles et sentimentales」, so he composed 「Valses nobles et sentimentales」as a suite form.And 「La Valse」 has the ternary form with coda, so it has reflected his definite musical character. The pentatonic scale, whole-tone scale and church modes are used in various ways in melody. In harmony he used 7th, 9th, 11th, and 13th chord with additional tones, especially using the parallel chord and disonant chord. And he also used tone cluster of modernistic techniques.Because he preferred the precise rhythms, he adopted many rhythms of dance suites to his works. In his waltz, he reflected his musical language through his unique rhythm of the vague motion of measure, the change of dynamic and the change of accent.Ravel is not only an impressionist but an ultramodernist. In his waltz, the classical melodies and harmonies could be found easily, and the modernistic things as well. Finally, 20th century's many musicians be influenced significantly.
