This research paper aims to focus on the correlation between Chusa Kim Jeong-hee who is known as a scholar and a calligrapher in epigraphy in the Late Joseon Dynasty. Kim Jeong-hee is the person who developed a unique Chusa writing style after establishing diplomatic relations with China, which influenced Weng Fang-Gang(翁方綱) and Ruan Yuan(阮元). Thus, he has led the field of epigraphy and calligraphy. It has been widely proven in academia that his writing was developed based on epigraphy. However, a detailed approach to the relationship has never been discussed. Focusing on this subject, this paper aims to reveal the relationship between Kim Jeong-hee’s epigraphy and writing style. When Kim Jeong-hee was active, the foreign negotiation between Joseon and Qing Dynasty caused major changes in learning and literature overall, and calligraphy was also inspired by the inheritance of ancient law. In particular, as the study of epigraphy and the understanding of the ancient epigraph amplified due to exchange, many tombstones and rubbings were introduced. Thus, interest and research regarding Seal script (an ancient style of writing Chinese characters) and Clerical script were also heightened. In addition to this atmosphere, many scholars and their interaction face a major turning point after Kim establishes diplomatic relations with China.Kim learned research methods from Weng Fang-Gang and Ruan Yuan who he met in China, and the result of the newly created Qing dynasty stone epigraphic research under the influence of epigraphy has a great impact on Kim’s calligraphic style. After returning to Korea, the exchange of perspectives on epigraphy with Weng Shui-pei(翁樹崑), the son of Weng Fang-Gang, became an opportunity for Kim to be more fascinated with Josun epigraphy. The appearance of the unique ‘Chusa font’ has a close relationship with the study of Epigraphy. As stated in the paper, it is clearly applied to both copywriting and creation, which both uses epigraphy. Through a new interpretation, it was a great achievement to discover and analyze how Kim Jeong-hee's collection of Epigraphy materials impacted and led to the "Chusa font". After the death of Kim Jeong-hee, his students formed the ‘Chusa scholar groups’ based on his technique, and continued his studies. Representative figures who learned from Kim were Cho Gwang-jin(曺匡振), Lee Ha-eung(李昰應), Seo Byeong-o(徐丙五), Lee Han-bok(李漢福) and Oh Se-chang(吳世昌).The ideology of the Korean Art Exhibition, after the Josun Art Exhibition held during the Japanese colonial era and the liberation, emphasized creativity and individuality rather than an imitation of tradition. However, the stone epigraphy based on the epigraphic calligraphy achieved by Kim Jeong-hee is still giving an impact to this day. Although Son Jae-hyeong(孫在馨), Yoo Hui-gang(柳熙綱), Kim Chung-hyeon(金忠顯), and Kim Eung-hyeon(金膺顯) are calligraphers representing modern and present calligraphy, they do not exactly follow the form of Chusa. They are inheriting the stone epigraphy established by Kim Jeong-hee which has a great influence on today’s calligraphers’ organization.
