Abstract This study proposed guidelines for the creation of a healing garden for dementia elderly care facilities to improve the health and quality of life of the elderly living in dementia care facilities, and analyzed problems and suggested solutions by examining the field conditions of elderly care facilities located in Changwon Special City. A healing garden is a facility that is required to be introduced to improve the health and quality of life in old age by creating a garden similar to a natural environment to provide plant, animal, and food-mediated healing programs and to promote or maintain health through cognitive, psychological, sentimental, and social activities of the elderly with dementia. First, in order to propose guidelines for the creation of healing gardens for the elderly with dementia, a theoretical review of the concept of nursing facilities for the elderly, the concept of healing gardens, and the characteristics of the elderly with dementia was first conducted, and then 14 items of healing garden healing components were derived by organizing and analyzing existing related previous research literature. Second, in order to select the healing elements, which are detailed items of the derived healing garden components, 12 healing elements were proposed as guidelines for creating a healing garden, excluding two healing elements that did not match the importance of the healing elements shown in the expert group survey and the preference shown in the general public group survey. Third, as a result of the field survey, the degree of reflection of healing factors was high in social welfare corporation facilities, while the degree of reflection was low in private facilities. This result is because government support is excluded from private facilities in the functional reinforcement project of social welfare facilities supported by the government. Therefore, it was found that improvement was necessary in future government support projects. Fourth, the guidelines for the creation of healing gardens for dementia elderly care facilities in 12 items proposed as the main body of this study are as follows.Healing factor 1. Social activity spaceHealing factor 2. Flower and Planting SpaceHealing factor 3. Floor material for easy access to the healing gardenHealing factor 4. Exercise walking spaceHealing factor 5. Curious WalksHealing factor 6. Height to touch and move plantsHealing factor 7. Privacy-Enhanced Rest AreaHealing factor 8. Ecological pond with hydroponic facilitiesHealing factor 9. Vegetables That Can Be HarvestedHealing factor 10. Pet ActivitiesHealing factor 11. Wooden high-rise flowerbedsHealing factor 12. Three-a-week program Currently, there is no facility standard for healing gardens in the standards for establishing nursing homes for the elderlyIn order to improve the quality of life of the elderly with dementia living in senior care facilities, to alleviate and prevent the symptoms of dementia, efforts to reflect the healing factors of the healing garden in the standards of senior care facilities are needed.
