The demand for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) the most widely used energy storage devices because of their outstanding energy density and high reversibility has been increased as the number of uses such as electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage system (ESS) expanded. So satisfying the demand of electric capacity for large scale batteries that cathode is required to have high energy density with low price. Li2MnO3 with a lithium-rich layered structure have high theoretical capacity and low cost can used to cathode for next-generation LIBs. However, there is a problem that the activation process is required because it is synthesized with Mn4+ has low electrochemical activity. As a result, Li2MnO3 manifests low structural stability due to fast collapse of crystal structure. In this study, Fe-doped Li2MnO3 cathodes with different iron concentrations are synthesized to improve structural stability and electrochemical performance in LIBs. The structural stability and cycleability are increased by high oxygen affinity of iron that prevents excessive oxygen evolution from crystal structure. In addition, the activation overpotential is reduced by weakening the attraction between manganese and oxygen. The practical capacity and rate performance of LIBs are improved because of increased ion and electric conductivity with an appropriate iron concentration.
