Throughout history, hero image have appeared frequently. They can be found in national mythologies or as mythological heroes in creation myths. These heroes, portrayed in a variety of ways throughout history, not only capture the essence and way of life of their times, but they also spread quickly over the world through media created by other countries, interacting with the general public.Since the twenty-first century, Chinese animated films have continuously evolved, influenced by the formidable American animated film market, striving for excellence in shaping heroic personas in sync with the times. Despite significant progress, there is still a significant gap between the mature production and quality of American animated films. The portrayal of hero image in Chinese and American animated films in the twenty-first century shares similarities. In terms of character design, both countries use exaggerated and transformative artistic techniques to create a variety of heroic character types. In terms of character depth, heroes from both countries share similarities and differences in their value orientations, willpower, moral choices, and so on.The external aspects of hero depictions in Chinese and American animated films are constantly evolving, exhibiting both parallels and divergences. Both countries' animated films feature a wide variety of hero types that reveal unique hero archetypes. The difference between Chinese and American animated heroes' external traits is that Chinese heroes emphasize tradition and mythological elements more than American heroes do. In addition, there are disparities in the internal components of hero images between the two nations, which include characteristics such as motivations, personality, and aptitudes.Finally, how animated hero image are portrayed is also influenced by the cultural differences between China and the United States. Therefore, by examining the variations in hero image depicted in Chinese and American animated films, this study intends to investigate the disparities across multiple times and civilizations. To understand the hero image in these animated movies, the study focuses on ‘Jiang Ziya’ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’. First, we discuss what heroes are and how they have changed throughout time and in different cultures. After that, factors pertaining to hero image are separated into two categories: internal variables and external factors. These include things like personality, growth, motivations, moral decisions, and special skills. External factors include things like era backgrounds, appearance, clothes, and special talents.The results of this study will help us comprehend the cultural traits of the hero image in Chinese and American animated films. By examining these differences, we can better understand how different cultures view heroes and how animated movies spread these notions. This is essential to comprehending how national cultural variations affect the creation of films. Particularly, American animated films place more of an emphasis on modernization, individualism, and freedom than Chinese animated films do on preserving national identity via traditional culture and values.This study highlights how hero image in animated movies express the audience's desire for heroic qualities in addition to reflecting the ideologies and values of contemporary society. Since heroic images have the power to shape young audiences' moral and value systems, they are especially important in today's viewership. Animated films, as a medium, thus hold great significance in shaping culture and values, not only by reflecting societal ideals but also by shaping viewers' perceptions.Chinese and American animated film industries each have their own advantages and traits. While American creativity and diversity propel the growth of animated films, China's rich traditional culture and history offer a fertile creative ground. This study emphasizes the similarities and differences between Chinese and American animated films' hero image, highlighting the influence of culture, time, and values on animated films. This will provide invaluable insights for film production and cross-cultural exchange, facilitating a deeper comprehension and appreciation of animated films from various cultures.
