This paper aimed to analyze the Haegum solo melodies of the 《Yangsan-do-themed Haegum Concerto》 by a Haegum player and composer, Kim Young-jae. It intended to examine the musical transition of the Haegum melodies of Gyeonggi folk song 〈Yangsan-do〉 into those of the Haegum Concerto. Firstly, 《Yangsan-do-themed Haegum Concerto》, unlike the Gyeonggi folk song 〈Yangsan-do〉 from which it was sourced and which is played with a single Jangdan, Semachi, has 4 kinds of Jangdan in addition to Semachi such as Dongsalpuri+Heullim, Semachi, Jajinmori, Semachi, Jungmori and rapid Jajinmori. Furthermore, it uses a composition of the Western style through a total of 5 rhythmical changes and tonal changes of E♭ Major, A♭ Major. Secondly, analytic findings on the solo melodies of《Yangsan-do-themed Haegum Concerto》 are as follows. First, cadenza(free beat), continuous melodies of short ornaments composed of the pentatonic scale of Gyeonggi folk song, is freely performed depending on techniques of a player. Second, as Semachi Jangdan, Semachi(solo+orchestral melodies) ⓐ and ⓑ are identical to Jangdan of the original Gyeonggi folk song 〈Yangsan-do〉. The melodies of Semachi ⓐ, which were borrowed from the Gyeonggi folk song 〈Yangsan-do〉, clearly shows the theme of the piece. Semachi ⓑ is the creative melodies which do not deviate greatly from the pentatonic scale of Gyeonggi folk song with a call and response style. Third, in Gyeonggi folk song 〈Yangsan-do〉 with Semachi Jangdan, Jajinmori of 3 small beats/3 beats undergoes the variation to Jajinmori of 3 small beats/4 beats, showing the most dramatic change of the original 〈Yangsan-do〉. Fourth, Semachi(solo) is in 9/8 time, which is the same as Semachi(solo+orchestral melodies) ⓐ and ⓑ. In addition, its melodies were borrowed from the refrain of the first verse of the Gyeonggi folk song 〈Yangsan-do〉. Fifth, Jungmori most stands out with its lyrical mood through the duet with Gayageum in the orchestration. Sixth, as the cadence, in the rapid Jajinmori, creative Haegum solo melodies enhance the speed and mood more than any other Jangdan toward the end of the piece, using octave leap(Do E♭), triplets() and tremolo(). Hence, the research reveals that 《Yangsan-do-themed Haegum Concerto》 is the very distinctive and creative work which made various musical attempts while conforming to the original melodies under the traditional material of 'folk song'. This paper examined the musical aspects of Haegum, which has been extended in a modern manner using the creative source of 'folk song', with a focus on 《Yangsan-do-themed Haegum Concerto》 by Kim Young-jae. The study shows that creative folk song is an important foundation for the modernization of tradition. It is expected for the research to be helpful for understanding the principles of expansion for the creative Haegum pieces.
