Korea and China have been geographically and historically close for a long time, and have maintained constant exchange and influence in the field of literature. Both Korea and China showed an intrinsic rebirth as the Westerns’ modern capitalism of the 19th century intertwined with imperialism. However, the two countries failed to achieve autonomous liberalization and rather experienced modernization due to the pressure of foreign powers. This has caused a great shock to the contemporary society and has had a profound effect on the literature of both countries which brought about a great transformation in the old and the new literature. This study is based on the assumption of the historical background’s similarity in the growth and development of Korean and Chinese modern literature. Korean poet Kim So-wol and Chinese poet Zhu Xiang were selected as research subjects for their similar biographic and literary life as well as their poetic thoughts. Both of their poetry was compared based on the motif that arises. Through the analysis of the works centered on the motifs common to the poems of Kim So-wol and Zhu Xiang the poetic ethos of their works was derived and compared. Based on this, judging from the aspect of modernity in which both poets implicate tradition and innovation in their poetry, the researcher tried to evaluate the current values and status of the two poets’ work from the perspective of tradition and innovation. The study is divided into five chapters. In chapter I Introduction, purpose of this study, review of related literature, research method, scope and contents of the research were identified. In chapter Ⅱ, the researcher examined the poetic background and motifs of Kim So-wol and Zhu Xiang’s poems. Also, the researcher investigated the time period and literary activities of poets, the similarity and difference between their poetic thoughts, as well as the problem of poetic motifs and variations. Chapter 3 compares the motifs of Kim So-wol and Zhu Xiang’s poetry. As a result of examining ‘Nim / Death / Narrative’ motifs, the characteristic of Kim So-wol’s motif is ‘mixed,’ while the characteristic of Zhu Xiang’s motif is ‘disconnection.’ In the case of the ‘Nim’ motif, the ‘nim’ revealed in the poems of the two poets are all objects to which the poetic speaker hopes and yearns and is absent from reality. Also, due to the absence of the ‘Nim’, the object of love, both poets seem to be suffering from despair which eventually created a death consciousness in the end. In the case of the ‘death’ motif, the two poets reveal their intimacy without rejecting ‘death’. The ‘death’ according Kim So-wol implies the communication between this life and the afterlife. On the other hand, the ‘death’ according to Zhu Xiang implies the absolute disconnected aspect of life and death. In the case of the ‘narrative’ motif, there are many traditional tales in both poets’ works. Although both Kim So-wol and Zhu Xiang borrowed a story plot of a local folklore or even borrow the same narrative motif, each person’s individuality and sense of reality is reflected in their own work. In Chapter Ⅳ, the researcher explicated the characteristics and the suggestive meaning on the motif and the status in literary history of Kim So-wol and Zhu Xiang’s poetry. Based on the characteristics of poetic motifs derived from Chapter III, the researcher have examined the characteristics of modern poetry revealed in the poems of Kim So-wol and Zhu Xiang in the perspective of ‘tradition’ and ‘innovation.’ While they inherited the characteristics of classics in the process of modernization of Korea and China, they introduced poetic contents and phenomena that can express modern characteristics according to the times. For the conclusion shown in Chapter Ⅴ, the above-mentioned contents and the meaning and value of Kim So-wol and Zhu Xiang’s poetries are summarized as follows. First, when the poetry tradition of Korea and China in the early days was not handed down by generation and the crisis of “severance” was imminent, Kim So-wol and Zhu Xiang suggested the direction of poetry to have a mixed modern character applying both traditional and modern characteristics. Second, Kim So-wol and Zhu Xiang have played an important role in the rise of poetry in the modern era and laid the foundation for tradition and innovation. Third, the two poets are not only limited to the modern views of both countries but play a significant role in the history of Korean and Chinese literature. At present, their works also lead to a generational relationship that can cater from the classics, to the present, and to the far future. Both Korea and China have a long tradition of unique poetry in their own countries. The poetry of both poets inherits the unique culture of their country and shows the changes that have been adapted to the trend of the times. It has an important aspect in terms of the tradition and inheriting the inherent elements of the national poetry tradition of the two countries.
