The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a cognitive performance scale for junior, collegiate, and amateur squash players. The research questions were as follows: First, what were the components of the cognitive performance scale for squash players? Second, what was the measurement scale for cognitive performance? Third, what was the unidimensionality on each component of the developed scale? Fourth, how suitable were the categories on response of the developed scale? Fifth, how suitable were the items of the developed scale?, and sixth, how were the discriminatory items by gender in the developed scale? In Study 1, a Delphi survey was conducted to develop the cognitive performance scale with 30 experts in squash over three rounds. Based on the inductive content analysis on open-ended questions, the components were classified into five domains: psychological, physical, strategic, technical, and environmental, respectively. Subsequently, six experts extracted 46 preliminary items through review processes of eliminating abstractive, non-important, and redundant items. The preliminary items were consist of a 5-point Likert scale, then assessed to determine the content validity ratio, agreement, convergence, and coefficient of variation. At a initial stage, a 37-item of a cognitive performance scale for squash players was developed with eliminating nine-item. At a final stage, 32-item using a 7-point Likert scale were developed after additionally eliminating five items. In Study 2, a convenience sample of 100 squash players and coaches (15 coaches and 85 players) participated to validate the developed cognitive performance scale. The Rasch polytomous model, specifically Andrich's rating scale model, and Rasch’s principal component analysis were undertaken to assess the fit. To begin with, the unidimensionality was confirmed with the five domains (i.e., psychological, physical, strategic, technical, and environmental) meeting the criteria. Furthermore, the goodness-of-fit for the response categories on the 5-point Likert scale was satisfied in five factors. Subsequently, item fit assessment led to the elimination of two items including each one item in the physical and environmental factors. Lastly, differential item functioning by gender (59 males, 41 females) resulted in the removal of eight items; two in the psychological factor, three in the physical factor, one in the technical factor, and two items in the environmental factor, respectively. Consequently, the final version with 24-item was developed as the cognitive performance scale for squash players. In conclusion, this study developed a cognitive performance scale for Korean squash players and it was verified as a sound measure to assess their cognitive performance. By incorporating the identified components of perceived performance, the scale could be contributed to enhancing athletes’ performance if it is utilized in their training program development and self-assessment.
