Previous studies suggested that in regard to the extratropical stochastic forcing to the tropical SST variability in the Pacific, the wintertime SST anomalies in the North Pacific, which are generated by mid-latitude atmospheric variability associated with North Pacific Oscillation (NPO), are able to force the equatorial Pacific SST anomalies in the subsequent winter via the so-called ‘seasonal footprinting mechanism (SFM)’. More recently, it has been suggested that Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM), the ocean-atmospheric coupling mode in the central and eastern parts of tropical and subtropical Pacific, spans between the extratropical and tropical Pacific and persists from boreal winter, when the extratropical atmospheric variability is strongest, to following seasons and accordingly plays an important role in connecting extratropical atmospheric variability to the occurrence of El Nino. NPO and PMM could consequently impact on SST of the equatorial Pacific during subsequent winter through similar processes, particularly Wind-Evaporation-SST (WES) feedback mechanism, but they do not necessarily occur together. In most related studies, the influences of NPO and PMM are mixed. This study examines the linkage between NPO and PMM, the representatives of the mid-latitude forcing that affects the tropical SST variability in the Pacific, for the period from 1872 to 2012. A conditional composite analysis indicates that only for the concurrence of NPO and PMM the significant El Nino-like spatial patterns of SST anomalies are induced in tropical Pacific during following winter. The running correlation coefficients between the indices of NPO and PMM, obtained from empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of sea level pressure variability in the North Pacific and singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis of SST-surface wind covariability in the tropical and subtropical Pacific respectively, show the noticeable interdecadal changes in the coupling strength of them. These interdecadal variations in the linkage of NPO and PMM might be related to changes of the mean state in the mid-latitude North Pacific associated with the changes of North Pacific jet stream, if any, affected by Aleutian Low (AL) variability on interdecadal timescale. It is also found that the mean trade winds in the period when NPO and PMM are more strongly linked make SST anomalies propagate equatorward and across the equator better via the WES feedback mechanism from the diagnosis using the results of a simple model that couples the Lindzen-Nigam one-layer trade wind boundary layer model used in Liu and Xie 1994 with the slab ocean model used in Wang 2010. In addition, the linkage between NPO and PMM is checked in the coupled model data. Also in some coupled models, the coupling of NPO and PMM induces El Nino-like SST anomalies in the equatorial Pacific during the subsequent winter more efficiently through the typical SFM in comparison to an occurrence of each of them alone and there exist distinct interdecadal variations in the coupling strength of NPO and PMM.
