Environmental pollution issues become more serious around the world, and the hydrogen is attracting great attention as a next generation clean energy source. Hydrogen is a sustainable energy source, which can be produced through electrochemical methods without emitting carbons. The efficiency of electrochemical hydrogen production has been based on precious metals such as platinum (Pt). However, it is difficult to commercialize the Pt-based catalysts due to their low durability and high prices. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are being actively studied as new electrochemical catalysts to replace the platinum. TMDs have excellent catalytic activity with the covalent bonds between the transition metal and chalcogen atoms. This research aims an improved hydrogen generation reaction by vertically stacking graphene with high carrier mobility at room temperature on MoS2 – MoSe2 heterostructures. It was observed that the repeated grain boundaries in the MoS2 – MoSe2 heterostructures produce an increase in catalytic activity with larger active areas, compared to those of MoS2 flakes grown by chemical vapor deposition. In addition, improved electrochemical reactions were observed in the vertical structure by reducing the contact resistance with Au by using graphene.
