(Abstract) Wildlife-Vehicle Collision (WVC) has emerged as a new cause of wildlife mortality due to the increase of motorized vehicles and paved roads since industrialization. Despite various efforts to reduce WVCs, it remains a significant cause of wildlife deaths, at least in urban areas. In this study, I aimed to quantitatively identify the factors affecting WVCs based on the types of roads. From 2009 to 2017, a nationwide WVC monitoring road sectors were designed, and WVC surveys were conducted. Wildlife biologists from regional environmental offices conducted field investigations and collected GPS locations of WVCs. Based on the GPS locations, I compiled annual, monthly, seasonal, and regional WVC statistics for different wildlife species. I also selected the top seven mammal species (Raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides, Siberian chipmunk Eutamias sibiricus, Siberian weasel Mustela sibirica, Water deer Hydropotes inermis, Red squirrel Sciurus vulgaris, Korean hare Lepus coreanus, Leopard cat Prionailurus bengalensis) with high WVC rates and analyzed the relationship between road characteristics and WVC occurrences using a linear mixed-effects model. The best models were selected based on the conditional Akaike information criterion (cAIC).During the nine years, a total of 143 WVCs were recorded, including 26 mammal species. The top seven mammal species exhibited differences in the pattern of WVCs based on their ecological characteristics and geographical distribution, as well as the factors contributing to WVCs.According to the species-specific WVC patterns, 1) Raccoon dogs exhibited a peak in WVCs during autumn when their activity increased due to breeding and dispersal, while their activity decreased from December to May due to reduced activity during the winter torpor. Raccoon dogs had a higher occurrence of WVCs on wider roads with higher speed limits with a median strip. 2) WVCs of Siberian chipmunks showed a drastic decline in November due to winter torpor, but it increased after giving birth and dispersal in May. Compared to larger roads with WVC prevention facilities that posed difficulties for Chipmunks to access, narrower roads in mountainous areas resulted in a higher frequency of Chipmunk mortalities. 3) Siberian weasels had a higher occurrence of WVCs in spring and autumn, corresponding to increased activity during mating, breeding, and dispersal of offspring. 4) Water deer was the only species that showed an increase in WVCs during the study period. WVCs of water deer peaked during the breeding season in spring and the mating season in autumn. Water deer had a higher number of WVCs on wider roads with a median strip, wildlife fences, and road shoulders. 5) Red squirrels showed the highest WVCs in autumn, coinciding with the harvest season of their food resources for winter. 6) Korean hares showed an initial increase in WVCs until 2012, followed by a decrease. The seasonal patterns of WVCs were similar to the overall trend, and no specific monthly characteristics related to breeding and birthing were identified. Similar to Water deer, Korean hares had a higher number of WVCs on wider roads with a median strip, fences, and road shoulders. 7) Leopard cats had the highest WVCs in September due to breeding during the autumn season. More WVCs were observed on narrower roads with a median strip and fences, indicating that these structures did not effectively prevent WVCs of Leopard cats.Although the number of WVCs has consistently decreased since 2010 in the monitoring roads, WVCs in South Korea have still continued to occur. This study can provide ecological information for effectively reducing WVCs. By applying the results of this study to WVC mitigation strategies, I’m convinced that efficient management based on the characteristics of target species can greatly contribute to reducing WVCs in South Korea.
