Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries (LIBs) are one of the key devices in modern society that provide stable energy storage and supply in various applications. As their range of use gradually extends from small electronic devices to large-scale grid energy storage systems and electric vehicles, there are ever-increasing needs for new low-cost high-performance LIBs. Currently, the major bottleneck in the development of LIBs is an absence of optimum cathode materials that can satisfy both cost and performance. In this respect, disordered rock-salt (DRX) cathode materials have recently received great attention as promising cathode candidates because of their high energy density, high degree of freedom in compositional design, and the ability to use inexpensive elements such as Fe, Ti, and Mn. Although various cation elements can be accommodated in the DRX cathode materials, they are distributed in the anionic lattice without long-rage order, which makes it difficult to precisely understand their actual structures and associated reaction mechanisms. Moreover, detailed understanding on the interplay between multiple cations in the disordered structure is yet largely missing. In chapter 2, the effect of local cation arrangement on the structural and electrochemical behaviors of DRX cathode materials is investigated using Li1.233Mo0.467Cr0.3O2 (LMCO) model compound. LMCO initially has well-ordered layered structure but becomes cation-disordered during cycling. The evolution of structure-property-performance correlations upon progression of cation-disorder is investigated through a series of synchrotron- and lab-based multiscale characterizations. It is shown that the as-prepared LMCO has separate nano-domains resembling Li2MoO3 and LiCrO2, despite an absence of bulk phase segregation. The separation between the Mo/Li-rich and Cr/Li-poor domains is remained even after significant cation-disorder, and different local structural feature of each domain is shown to significantly affect the bulk structural and electrochemical reaction processes of this material. The formation/dissociation of short Mo–Mo bonds accompanied by a unique MoO6 octahedral distortion in the Mo/Li-rich domains makes lattice parameter variations very small during Mo redox process after LMCO becomes disordered. This effect is intensified with an increase in the degree of disorder because of the dissipation of anisotropy. In disordered LMCO, each domain has different 0-TM diffusion ability. Based on this, the domain-dependent kinetics, asymmetric Li+ diffusion, and associated hysteresis and degradation mechanisms are explained. In chapter 3, the compositional effect on the reaction mechanism of DRX cathode materials is investigated using three different Li-excess Fe-based DRX oxyfluoride compounds, Li2Fe0.5M’0.5O2F (M’ = Fe, Ti, Mn), exhibiting Fe3+/4+ and O2-/n- redox activities. Designing cathode materials based on the Fe3+/4+ and O2-/n- redox couples is a promising direction for reducing the manufacturing cost of LIBs. However, many of such materials suffer from low first cycle coulombic efficiency, large voltage hysteresis. Here I address these issues by investigating the charge compensation mechanism of above mentioned three compounds through a series of electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. It is shown that a prevention of internal charge transfer (ICT) process associated with the Fe3+/4+ and O2-/n- redox reactions, is essential to increase the first cycle coulombic efficiency and reduce voltage hysteresis. The undesirable ICT is found to be largely suppressed when the Fe3+/4+ redox couple is used along with Mn3+/4+ redox couple in DRX structure, owing to the unusual decrease in the Fe3+/4+ redox potential probably associated with strong 180° Fe–O–Mn superexchange interaction. The composition exhibits high capacity of 309 mAh g-1 and energy density of 998 Wh kg-1, providing new guidelines for the design of DRX cathode materials based on the earth abundant elements.
