The purpose of this study is on the exhibition of ‘Brilliant Night’ opened in Ryuga-heon gallery at Tongui-dong, Jongro-gu in Seoul from April 8, 2014 to April 13, 2014. When it gets dark, the familiar space turns into an unpredictable scene due to artificial beams such as lighting apparatus. Transformation of color and overlapped shadows contribute to this phenomena, in which a familiar space is changed into a exotic background. I have composed ‘Brilliant Night’ to seek out a means of ‘defamiliarization’ effect working even in photography. In other words, this work aims to create a unfamiliar space under the process of representing a familiar space through photography. As a result, with the intervention of incidental elements, I have taken a picture of night scene to demonstrate how a familiar scene can be changed into a new landscape. The transformation of night scene into an unfamiliar scene which is different from the daylight comes from the modification of a chemical reaction of film emulsion. This ‘defamiliarization’ effect is seen in the works of surrealists like Rene Magritte, but they are different from the application of defamiliarization to photography. ‘Brilliant Night’ utilized a negative film, which makes the night scene unfamiliar due to the color temperature and the reciprocity law failure effect. The representation of unrealistic color from modification of film emulsion is interesting in terms of color-psychology. The night scene screened by a film is demonstrated in diverse ways. More specifically, the night sky is displayed as a cold color and some parts lit by street lamps as a warm color. In this way, the dramatic contrast between a cold color and a warm color strengthens the ‘defamiliarization’ of ‘Brilliant Night’.
