Recently, as the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental problems have emerged, research on the development of alternative energy is being conducted in various ways. Research on solar thermal energy, wind energy, bioenergy, nuclear energy, and hydrogen energy is in progress, and among them, research on hydrogen energy production is being actively conducted. Among the various hydrogen energy production methods, research on water decomposition is being conducted more actively, and the hydrogen energy generated through this process is environmentally friendly and has the advantage of being infinite. However, since a high overvoltage is required to reduce and oxidize hydrogen and oxygen, respectively, in the water decomposition reaction, catalytic research is being actively conducted to lower this. In general, Pt series is widely used as a catalyst, but since it is expensive and the reserves are not abundant, transition metals such as Co, Ni, and Fe are frequently used. In this study, water electrolysis electrochemical catalyst using carbide and graphene was attempted to manufacture. In the first part of this study, it was aimed to produce polycrystalline nickel nanoparticles with many grain boundaries to facilitate the production of graphene. In the experiment, nickel nanoparticles having a size of 82.3±27.1 nm were prepared by introducing a sonochemical method to the hydrazine precipitation conversion method, which has been widely used.In the second part, Ni/Ni3C coreshell nanoparticles were synthesized by carburizing the nanoparticles generated in the first part as a base to nickel particles using a carbon source provided during thermal decomposition of the polyol solution. After that, a water electrolysis catalyst electrode was prepared and measurements of HER and OER were performed. In the third part, Ni/Graphene coreshell nanoparticles were synthesized by heat-treating the Ni/Ni3C coreshell to generate graphene through the catalytic action of nickel on carbon. After that, a water electrolysis catalyst electrode was prepared and measurements for HER and OER test were performed. The two coreshell nanoparticles obtained in the second and third parts were measured with a water electrolytic electrode by sampling carbon paper on 1 cm2, and it was confirmed that the HER and OER performance were evaluated without degradation for 50 hours. As a peculiarity, the overvoltage at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 was reduced to 283.69 mV for Ni/Ni3C coreshell nanoparticles and 289.93 mV for Ni/Graphene nanoparticles during the evaluation of OER performance. The cause was related to the reduction of charge transfer resistance and the increase in electrochemical surface area due to the formation of hydroxide in the case of Ni/Ni3C and the formation of amorphous carbon in the case of Ni/Graphene. The properties of each improved catalyst run at lower VRHE than commercially available IrO2 at higher current densities. Therefore, it is considered that the coreshell particles obtained through this synthesis can be used as a water electrolytic electrode material or a catalyst material in the future.
