This thesis aims to investigate the fantastical elements within the genre of veduta by examining the photorealism of realistic veduta, which was popular as a souvenir during the Grand Tour in 18th-century Venice. Previous studies have presented the development stages of the veduta genre as realistic veduta, idealized veduta, and architectural capriccio, explaining that the fantastical elements manifested in the idealized veduta were further intensified in the architectural capriccio stage. Building upon this previous research, this thesis also interprets the fantastical elements of the veduta genre in relation to the characteristics of architectural capriccio. However, this thesis diverges from previous studies by considering the manifestation of fantastical elements not in the idealized veduta but in the realistic veduta. Therefore, the research direction is focused on demonstrating the fantastical elements specifically within the realistic veduta. The fantastical elements of the realistic veduta arise from the deceptive use of realism within the genre, which this thesis refers to as "figural realism." However, since the foundation of veduta is rooted in reality, the imagination displayed within this genre has its limitations. To support this claim, this thesis analyzes the works of Bernardo Bellotto, whose artistic imagination is limited within the realm of what is realistically possible. For example, Bellotto's preliminary sketches were the result of refining actual landscapes captured through camera obscura and combining them using the montage technique. Through these preliminary works, the perspective of existing landscapes was modified in order to present subtly distorted realities, even in the completed veduta paintings. Some vedute classified as architectural capriccio also artificially combine the locations of existing buildings or synthesize multiple buildings in a state of ruin to create the capriccio effect. Particularly, Bellotto's most fantastical architectural fantasies possess material characteristics (form, texture, perspective) that are clear and evoke a familiar sensation, much like what one would see in reality. These cases in Bellotto's work support the hypothesis presented in this thesis, suggesting that the realistic veduta serves as an initial form of architectural capriccio. As a result, the achievements of this study can be summarized into two aspects. Firstly, it dismantles the prejudice that has long considered the realistic veduta as a type of photography by examining the fantastical elements within it. Throughout this process, it is discovered that the imagination manifested in the realistic veduta is controlled within the realm of what is realistically possible. Secondly, it strengthens the continuity among veduta types by presenting the realistic veduta as the starting point where the fantastical elements of the veduta genre are manifested. Through closely interconnected types, it becomes possible to conduct in-depth analysis of the veduta genre. However, the idealized veduta, which occupies the intersection between the realistic veduta and architectural capriccio, remains insufficiently defined and presents a theoretical gap that needs further exploration in this thesis's future research.
