The main purpose of this study was to test if self-esteem and ruminative response styles have a sequential mediation effect in the relationship between dispositional optimism and depression in college students. This study aimed to provide useful data in designing interventions for college students with depressive symptoms. The research questions were as follows. First, how is the relationship among optimism, self-esteem, ruminative response styles, and depression? Second, does self-esteem have a mediation effect on the relationship between optimism and depression? Third, between optimism anddepression, does ruminative response styles mediate the relationship? Fourth, does self-esteem and ruminative response styles have a sequential mediation effect between optimism and depression? An online survey targeting 331 university students attending universities across the country (103 males, 228 females) completed the research packetincluding measures of optimism (Korean Optimism Scale), self-esteem(RSES), ruminative response style (RRS), and depression (CES-D). The SPSS 21.0 program was used to analyze the data collected from the online survey. First, correlations among the primary variables were calculated, and then the PROCESS (Version 2.11) Macro (Model 6) was used to test the sequential mediation effect. The results of this study were as follows. First, optimism, self-esteem, ruminative response styles, and depression showed significant inter-correlations. Positive correlations were found between optimism and self-esteem as well as between ruminative response styles and depression. In addition, optimism and self-esteem each had negative correlations with Ruminative response styles and depression. Second, the mediation effect of self-esteem between optimism and depression was statistically significant. Third, on the other hand, the mediation effect of ruminative responsestyles between optimism and depression was not significant. Fourth, the sequential mediation effect of self-esteem and ruminative response styles between optimism and depression were significant. Thus, in order to reduce the level of depression and increase the level of optimism in college students, this study suggests focusing on boostingtheir self-esteem and reducing ruminative response styles in counseling settings. This study ends with discussions about its limitations and suggestions for future studies.
