Korean Studies is a broad and comprehensive discipline that analyzes various aspects under the theme of 'Korea'. For this reason, it is necessary to clarify the scope and identity of Korean Studies, and this study aims to provide quantitative and objective evidence. In particular, English-language journals, which play an important role in the globalization of Korean studies, were the subject of this study to understand the interests and research scope of the international Korean studies community. Therefore, this study analyzed English-language journals in the field of Korean studies published in Korea through a quantitative bibliometric methodology. The four English-language journals of Korean studies indexed in A&HCI and SCOPUS were selected, with a total of 1,910 articles, including 800 articles in Korea Journal, 482 articles in The Review of Korean Studies, 297 articles in Seoul Journal of Korean Studies, and 331 articles in Acta Koreana. The study was conducted in the following ways.First, the study conducted a content analysis by examining the research topics and time periods of the articles in the four journals. The research topics were categorized based on the Research Classification Table of the National Research Foundation of Korea, and the time periods were categorized based on the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture of the Academy of Korean Studies.Second, the study investigated author-related factors by identifying the authors' affiliation, location, status, and field of study, as well as the number of authors and the status of collaborative research.Third, the study analyzed the frequency of author keywords using Textom. First, the study identified the top 50 most frequently used author keywords for the entire period. Then, it analyzed the top 15 author keywords for each period, dividing the period into three: the first period (2008-2012), the second period (2013-2017), and the third period (2018-2022). This analysis aimed to understand the changes over time. In addition, we analyzed the characteristics of each journal individually. All of these results were visualized and presented in the form of a word cloud.Fourth, the study utilized Netminer 4.5 to perform topic modeling. We analyzed the keywords that appeared in papers from 2013 to 2022, spanning a period of 15 years. From this analysis, we identified the main words associated with each topic and determined the weight of each topic. The study results are summarized as followsFirst, Korean studies are dominated by the humanities, social sciences, and arts and sports, and all three areas have seen significant growth in the number and scope of published articles since 2000. In the humanities, the most common fields were history, Korean language and literature, religious studies, and philosophy. In the social sciences, political science, sociology, and anthropology were the most common fields. In the arts and sports, film, art, and music were the most common fields. The periods studied were contemporary era, Joseon era, and modern era, and in detail, research on the late Joseon Dynasty was the most common within Joseon era, and research on the Japanese colonial period was the most common within modern era. In addition, the distribution of research topics by time period revealed a concentration of papers dealing with humanities and sociology-related topics in the contemporary era.Second, in terms of the location of the authors of the articles, the majority of the authors were from domestic institutions (73.25%), but there was a steady increase in the proportion of authors from overseas institutions. In terms of affiliation, authors from Seoul National University accounted for 13.61% of the total, while authors from each journal publisher published the most papers in the remaining three journals except for the Korea Journal, including The Review of Korean Studies, Seoul Journal of Korean Studies, and Acta Koreana. The most common author status was "professor" (74.29%), followed by history, Korean language and literature, sociology, and political science and diplomacy. In terms of the number of authors, 91.78% of the articles were single-authored, but the number of articles with two or more co-authors was steadily increasing, particularly in the field of social sciences.Third, the author keywords were 'Korea', 'Buddhism', 'Japanesecolonialperiod', and 'Joseon'. The Korea Journal had the highest number of articles with keywords such as 'K-pop', 'Candlelight protest', 'Hallyu', and other terms related to Korean social issues and culture. In The Review of Korean Studies, the most frequent terms related to the religious philosophy of the Joseon Dynasty, such as 'Buddhism', 'Joseon', 'Neoconfucianism', and 'Confucianism'. In the Seoul Journal of Korean Studies, words related to history such as 'Silla', 'Joseon', 'Koryo', 'Samguksagi', and 'Archaeology' were relatively common. In Acta Koreana, many articles related to the topics of Joseon Dynasty studies such as 'Neoconfucianism', 'Toegyeyihwang', 'Confucianism', 'Humannature', and 'Yulgokyii'.Fourth, the topic modeling resulted in a total of five topics. They were "Korean Modern Political History," "Korean Buddhist Culture," "Korean Culture and Cultural Transmission," "Korean History," and "Religious Philosophy of Joseon Dynasty," with an even distribution across the five areas. Among them, the largest share was given to topic 3, "Korean Culture and Cultural Transmission," which has recently received new attention as the Korean Wave, Korean Wave, and K-culture. On the other hand, history, philosophy, and religion, which are the traditional disciplines of Korean studies, each accounted for three fields, confirming their continued significance as areas of research. The significance of this study is that it analyzes four English-language Korean Studies journals published in Korea to identify research trends and to quantitatively analyze the current interests and research areas of the international Korean Studies community. This work will also help to clarify the identity of Korean studies and predict the direction and future of Korean studies research.
The Review of Korean Studies 482편, Seoul Journal of Korean Studies 297편, Acta Koreana 331편 등 총 1,910편을 선정하였다. The Review of Korean Studies에서는 ‘Buddhism’, ‘Joseon’, ‘Neoconfucianism’, ‘Confucianism’ 등 조선시대 종교철학 관련 용어가 빈도수 상위를 차지하였다. Seoul Journal of Korean Studies에서는 ‘Silla’, ‘Joseon’, ‘Koryo’, ‘Samguksagi’, ‘Archaeology’ 등 역사학 관련 단어가 상대적으로 많이 도출되었다.
