The aim of this study is to reveal the correlation between audition reality shows which are pervasive and diversified in the 21st century and neo-liberal governmentality Michel Foucault proposed. According to Foucault, governmentality is “the conduct of conduct” and thus creates neo-liberal citizenship in terms of self-enterprising and self-help. In this sense, this paper argues that audition reality shows are one of the technologies of governmentality, and show us how to conduct as enterprising citizens. From this context, this study closely analyzes governmentality and the way it operates on audition reality shows. For this purpose, this study suggests largely three frameworks for analysis: judgement, anxiety and envy, ‘rites of passage' and ‘rags to riches' narratives, focusing on The X Factor in England and Superstar K2 in Korea. Through the analysis this study proposes that The X factor and Superstar K2 enact a process of becoming enterprising subject. First, judgment, which can be related to Foucault's notion of examination, is to construct power relation according to ‘seeing' and ‘being seen'. Auditionees become an object of conduct and thus are categorized in line with potential resources. Second, the emotion of anxiety presents an unstable ‘status', which leads to participating in audition reality shows in order to achieve definite status as winner. Next, this study discusses envy as a desire to be ideal-object. What is important is that ‘ideal-object' is an effect of intervention, which is neo-liberal governmentality in audition reality shows. Third, the narrative structure of 'rites of passage' and 'rags to riches' is a process of transformation of the subejct into enterprising being. Finally, this study discusses the socio-cultural implications of a surge of audition reality shows these days from the point of view of ideological fantasy.
