ABSTRACTA Study on the Characteristics of Journalism in Military Reporting Social Networking ServiceJung, Eun JinVisual JournalismDept. of Digital ImageThe Graduate School of Sangmyung UniversityTraditionally, military-media relations are partially opposed based on national security and the people's right to know. At this, the freedom of expression of soldiers using social networking services and the people's right to know have combined, raising interest in social networking services and the media reporting situations within the military. This is because there have been an increasing number of news reports made by media outlets such as broadcasters and newspapers based on military-related social networking services. In addition, it is being argued that social networking services should be viewed as a form of journalism due to changes in journalism environments. This study studied social networking services and media outlets centered on 'reports' related to 'the military'. Through this, observations were made on contents that are posted on social networking services and on what posts are covered by the media. Also, observations were made into the argument that commonalities and differences between social networking services and the media are now characteristics and new aspects of social networking service journalism.Accordingly, an empirical study was conducted on the social networking service Page B. Page B is a representative social networking service related to the military and reports and it is recently the most cited social networking service related to the military in the media. The research period was set from May 1 to August 31, when Page B began to receive real media attention. Quantitative data for 4 months was secured and analyzed. The media coverage period was set one week longer than the post collection period. Information on posts that could be found through social networking services included military affiliation (역주: 군), source, information type, attachments, and user involvement (likes, shares, comments). Based on this, relationships between the reporting nature and coverage of posts were examined. The results of the study are as follows. Analysis conducted on [Research Question 1] and [Research Question 3] showed that information obtained through social networking service posts, such as military affiliation, source, information type, and attachments, were related to whether reports were respectively made or not and with whether those reports were covered by the media. Cases in which military affiliation and sources were known had a higher reporting rate and a higher rate of coverage than cases in which they were unknown. With reporting types, posts with a reporting nature and posts that are more widely covered had higher rates of appeals/complaints requiring higher response levels, demands for investigation/punishment, and demands for system improvement. With attachments, the ratio of posts without attachments to those with attachments was approximately 1:9 for all posts, reporting posts, and posts covered by the media. Posts appeared to be formalized as 'images+text'. Specifically, in the case of reporting posts and posts covered by the media, the proportion of "other" attachments gradually decreased when compared to all posts, and the proportion of "direct production" and "military unit insignias" accounted for a large portion.[Research Question 2] showed a relation to whether social networking service posts were reported or not and to whether they were covered by the media. Posts covered by the media at least once were all reporting posts with the exclusion of 1 post. This clearly shows that reporting posts are receiving attention as having news value from the media. Comprehensive judgments can be made that reporting posts and posts covered by the media show the same patterns in terms of general information (military affiliation, source), purpose (information type), and format (attachments). When reporting posts and posts covered by the media are compared to non-reporting posts, the difference seems to be that the latter are general social networking service posts while the former are posts of report-related social networking service journalism. In the case of [Research Question 4], user involvement in social networking service posts showed average differences depending on whether the posts were reported or not. However, likes and comments were higher on average for non-reporting posts than reporting posts. [Research Question 5] examined whether there is an average difference in user involvement for social networking service posts according to whether or not they are covered by the media. There were no differences in the average number of likes and comments, but the average number of shares was higher for cases that were covered by the media than for those that were not. Through this, it was shown that, in terms of user involvement, likes and comments were higher for reporting posts than for non-reporting posts, but that there was no correlation to whether they were covered by the media or not. However, the average number of shares was higher for reporting posts than for non-reporting posts and even higher for p osts that were covered by the media, showing significant results.[Research Question 6] examined the characteristics of social networking service journalism through military-reporting social networking services. The characteristics of social networking service journalism are that it shows high value beyond existing media in terms of news values such as conflict, timeliness, proximity, human interest, and influence. However, some areas where social networking service journalism lacks accuracy and objectivity compared to existing media are partially supplemented through gatekeeper functions through fact-checking and descriptions of military unit situations. Social networking service journalism plays a reverse agenda-setting role for military policy agendas that go beyond agenda-setting roles implemented by the existing media, and it is optimized for mobile environments and mainly operated using visualization images. This study looked into relationships the reporting and coverage of military-reporting social networking service posts through observations of their information and user involvement. Based on such relationships, determinations can be made on the reporting and coverage of social networking service posts to contribute to media and public information responses, and this can aid in the understanding of social networking services journalism.
