This study researched novels of Choe Myeong-Ik who was a writer and took charge of one great role in late 1930s modernism novels at the history of modern Korean literature. By paying attention to a fact that Choe Myeong-Ik was a writer who minutely exposed attitudes of the reality recognitions of intellectuals, the study intended to analyze self-discovery processes of intellectuals that were appeared as main features in his novels. When Japanese oppression was deepened more in the late 1930s, ideological controls and repressions became extreme further. In the shocks called modern capitalism’s adverts together with strengthened colonial rules, intellectuals became lethargic day by day, and they showed anxiety and despairs accordingly. Choe Myeong-Ik described real truths of intellectuals who got along while not adjusting to the reality in this way. This study mainly analyzed 5 works such as 「Rainy Road」, 「No personality(無性格者)」, 「Paradox(逆說)」, 「Lungfish Man(肺魚人)」, 「Heart Prints(心紋)」 where intellectuals were appearing as main figures. First of all, the study looked into figures of main characters that became ruined while losing directing points. Intellectuals who was destitute by being protruded from reality wondered by not finding out meanings of own existence. They came to be surrounded by fear and frustrations while being alienated from the world without having interchanges with it. And they were indulged in inner divisions and conflicts gradually. Specially, intellectuals became to make confrontations with living persons who enjoyed material success and wealth with snobbery differently from themselves. This study watched for their conflicts and confused self-consciousness owing to dual emotions such like looking down the persons’ snobbery and also angering existences of stable actuality. Thus, intellectual main figures to whom pessimistic recognitions were deepened because of psychological anguish and wandering became to enter into own self-reflection and introspections one by one. They searched for changes for finding out new selves, and leaned efforts of trying to recover egos. At this time, meetings with others became an important moment. Intellectuals observed their inner while looking at living people who were in confronted stances, and became to introspected selves through others. By doing so, they came to get the possibility of being able to overcome troubles while finding out own identity. Resultantly, they became to recover prides little by little, and their trials for doing changes so as to get out of troubles could be looked. Intellectuals showed willingness of overcoming confusion and frustrations without indulging in desperate despair and anxiety. Methods and aspects of the changes were not aggressive and exposed clearly. However, it could be said as having a meaning in that they found out new visions ultimately and tried to do changes of self-consciousness. Through above discussions, this study looked into the reality of the times shown in Choe Myeong-Ik novels, and lightened up self-discovery processes of contemporary intellectuals who had anguished between ideals and reality, pride and snobbery. They were fallen to helplessness and conflicts, and confused features owing to inner divisions in the early part. Nonetheless, intellectuals recovered prides while introspecting themselves little by little, and groped for positive changes with dreams on the new life. The literary meaning of Choe Myeong-Ik novels could be confirmed from these points.
