Organic and inorganic compounds are used to impart functional properties such as antibacterial, deodorant and UV-blocking to cotton fibers. But they generally do not adhere to cotton fibers and binders must be used. These binders are generally composed of high molecular weight polymers which cannot penetrate easily into cotton fiber, so that most functional compounds adhere to the fiber surface, resulting in inferior durability and a rough touch.Cationic guar gum is a biocompatible and biodegradable compound that has strong adhesion to cotton fibers and is known to adsorb and aggregate anionic compounds to form complexes. In this study, the applicability of cationic guar gum as a binder was investigated by using it in the treatment of cotton fibers with negatively charged aqueous dispersed titanium dioxide, zinc oxide. When nano-sized inorganic particles were treated with cotton fiber alone, they did not adsorbed on cotton, but when treated with cationic guar gum, it was confirmed that a considerable amount of inorganic particles could be adsorbed not only on the surface of cotton fiber but also inside the fiber. Inorganic particles and cationic guar gum dispersions were thought to form complexes based on the FT-IR data, changes in zeta portential with pH, and particle diameter changes in mixed dispersions. Amylase enzyme treatment was used to remove cationic guar gum, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide on the surface of cotton fibers and analyze the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide content which penetrated into the cotton fiber. Significant presence of the inorganic particles inside the cotton fiber could be observed using SEM EDS. It is believed that complexes are formed inside the cotton fiber, from the interaction of the cationic guar gum and the inorganic particles, and thus it is firmly attached to the cotton fiber.Approximately 90% of the inorganic particles remained even after 20 repeated machine washing cycles, confirming that the durability is relatively excellent. This also suggests that the complexes of the cationic guar gum and the inorganic particles is very likely to be adsorbed inside the cotton fiber. As a result very good UV-blocking and antimicrobial properties are maintained even after 20 washing cycles.
