Beethoven’s Cello Sonatas have been generally considered as remarkable works which show Beethoven’s own distinct musical features and have contribute to the development of Cello Sonata works. Historically, the Cello was hardly regarded as a solo instrument. For a long period of time it was rather generally considered as the instrument for basso continuo. In his Cello Sonatas, Beethoven widens instrumental possibilities for the Cello by using the piano and Cello equally. It brings significant changes to the history of the Cello. In this thesis, I will examine Beethoven’s Cello Sonata Nos. 1, 3 and 5 and show the musical features of the works alongside their musical significance in the history of Western music. For such research , firstly, this study examines Beethoven’s life and musical features in his three musical periods. Secondly, this study explones the history of the Cello Sonata genre ranging from the Baroque to the Romantic period. Lastly, this study analytes Beethoven’s Cello Sonatas (Nos. 1, 3 and 5) and sheds light on musical features shown in the very pieces by comparing form, movement, expression, harmony, tonality and so forth.
